Understanding Why We Struggle to Value Exceptional Things

Chapter 1: A Journey Through Musical Evolution
In 2015, I found myself as an MBBS undergraduate, returning to my hostel after a long night at the library. As I scrolled through Spotify, I stumbled upon a track by the progressive metal band Animals as Leaders titled "Ka$cade."
For those unfamiliar, Animals as Leaders is a genre-defying band. My initial reaction was one of disdain; the song struck me as peculiar. At that time, I was a guitarist in a rock band, so my expectations were set elsewhere.
Two years later, my band disbanded due to the absence of a drummer. To fill that void, I enrolled at the Parikrama School of Music in New Delhi, where I began my drumming journey.
After months of lessons, I came to appreciate the intricate beauty of Animals as Leaders’ music. The polyrhythmic complexity began to resonate with me.
Understanding drum notation allowed me to truly hear the music rather than just observe it. I realized my earlier lack of appreciation stemmed from not having the foundational knowledge to comprehend the band's artistry.
Fast forward to 2020; I overheard a group of doctors at my hospital lamenting their losses in Bitcoin investments. At that time, I was merely a Bitcoin minimalist, having heard of it but lacking a clear understanding. My perceptions were shaped by media portrayals, leading me to view Bitcoin as a dubious scheme.
As time passed, my views transformed. I recognized that my initial misconceptions were due to my limited knowledge of finance, software development, networking, and cryptography. Through extensive reading, coding practice, and experimenting with smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain, I unearthed the true essence of Bitcoin.
Reflecting on my earlier misconceptions, I chuckle at how ill-equipped I was to grasp Bitcoin's implications back in 2020.
Consider this image from a groundbreaking research paper by Watson and Crick, which unveiled the structure of DNA. Without a foundation in biology or chemistry, one cannot appreciate its significance.
This phenomenon can be attributed to the Dunning-Kruger Effect, where individuals fail to recognize their knowledge gaps, leading to an inability to value remarkable concepts.
To truly appreciate profound ideas in art, science, philosophy, or music, one must first establish the necessary foundational knowledge. Just as English is essential to read this article, similar basics are required to understand greatness in various disciplines.
Consider this verse from the Ishavasya Upanishad: "The infinite proceeds from the infinite."
