Reassessing Our Work Week: Why Thursdays Are the New Fridays

Written on

Chapter 1: The Weekend Mentality

It’s no secret that Fridays are often celebrated as the most enjoyable day of the week, while Sundays can bring a sense of dread as the weekend comes to a close.

Most people seem to be waiting for the weekend, but is there a better way to approach our workdays? This mindset hints at a deeper issue regarding worker burnout, a pervasive problem affecting many, including freelancers and entrepreneurs.

What if we could alter this narrative and find joy in every weekday, treating them with the same enthusiasm we reserve for weekends? This has been a personal goal of mine since high school. While weekends provide a break from routine, they can sometimes feel aimless and leave you feeling unfulfilled by the time Monday rolls around. Personally, I find it challenging to stay idle and prefer to distribute my workload throughout the week, even utilizing quieter moments during weekends to advance my goals. After all, how many movies can one truly watch? I would rather make progress on my objectives and enjoy my downtime during the workweek!

This shift in perspective may not resonate with everyone, but it’s certainly worth exploring. Many American workers tend to cram their tasks into Thursdays to alleviate the mental strain that often accompanies Mondays.

Thursdays are typically as busy as Tuesdays, serving as a midpoint in the week when most meetings and calls are scheduled. Mondays and Fridays often lack the same level of energy and opportunity, while Wednesdays strike a balance.

When I think of Thursdays as a time to push through before the weekend, I recognize that I often overextend myself to finish as much as possible before Friday. However, this approach can be counterproductive. How effective can I truly be if I’m merely racing against the clock? Isn’t the ultimate goal to enjoy the journey? Why not embrace Fridays for productivity when everyone’s spirits are typically higher?

Chapter 2: The Thursday Hustle

The notion of "Manic Monday," a classic tune by the Bangles, frequently echoes in my mind. It perfectly captures the stress and anticipation of a long week ahead, with Friday bringing a sense of liberation, only to be followed by the Sunday blues.

The lyrics resonate: "It’s just another manic Monday, and I wish it was Sunday."

In the U.S., issues of burnout, stress, and workaholism are long-standing. The culture often equates busyness with success, a badge of honor in many circles. In bustling cities like New York, where life is fast-paced and expensive, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison. We’re all striving for something, yet that “something” may not be what we truly desire but rather what society dictates.

While I can’t single-handedly reduce the staggering 90-hour workweek or alleviate the stress many face—especially during trying economic times—I hope to inspire a shift in perspective. Every individual has immense potential, and weekends shouldn’t be the only time to celebrate it. Given that many of us spend more hours at work than at home, why not find ways to derive satisfaction from our jobs and unlock our potential?

Though our roles may be replaceable, our unique personalities, interpersonal skills, and the energy we bring to a space are irreplaceable.

If you find yourself constantly racing against time, feeling like you’re on a rollercoaster ride at the beginning and end of each week, consider spreading your tasks out more evenly, savoring every moment, and refraining from making it a competition to complete everything by Thursday evening.

Work during the times that suit you best, rather than conforming to rigid schedules. This can help combat burnout, foster gratitude, and emphasize quality over quantity, ultimately adding genuine value where it matters most.

Thursdays can be just as enjoyable as Mondays—plan accordingly! And remember, Fridays can be fun too. Enjoy your Friday in your own way!
