Exploring the Shift: From iPhone to Google Pixel 7 Pro

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to the Pixel Experience

As a devoted admirer of Google's Pixel 'a' series, my journey began with the impressive Pixel 4a. It delivered a seamless Android experience, remarkable performance, and what quickly became my favorite smartphone camera—all for around £350.

A Week With the Pixel 4a (written by an iPhone Owner)

Can Google’s budget smartphone tempt a decade-long iPhone user away from iOS?

When Google offered me the chance to try the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro before their official launch, I was eager to accept. Here are my initial thoughts on these flagship devices, keeping in mind my background as an iPhone user. This could be an intriguing comparison.

Section 1.1: Pricing and Market Positioning

The standard Pixel 7 retails for $599, providing 128GB of storage, with an upgrade to 256GB available for an additional $100.

In comparison, the starting price for the iPhone 14 is £799 for the same 128GB capacity. If you opt for the 512GB model, the cost jumps to an eye-watering $1,099—quite steep for a smartphone.

When you look at the iPhone Pro models, things get even pricier. The iPhone 14 Pro Max, which is the closest rival to the Pixel 7 Pro, starts at $1,099 for the 128GB version, reaching up to a staggering $1,599 for 1TB of storage. The pricing strategy for the new Pixels is incredibly competitive. They match the iPhone in build quality, feature IP68 water resistance, and the Pro model showcases beautifully polished aluminum edges that exude “flagship” quality.

Section 1.2: Display and Biometrics

The most noticeable distinction between the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro is their display sizes. The Pixel 7 features a 6.3" OLED screen, while the 7 Pro boasts a larger 6.7" OLED display.

The 7 Pro also offers a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, while the standard 7 has a commendable 90Hz refresh rate. Both devices perform excellently in bright conditions, with the 7 Pro being noticeably brighter due to an extra 100 nits of peak brightness. Additionally, they both feature always-on displays, a hallmark of Android devices.

For biometrics, both models introduce face unlock, which is incredibly quick. However, I tend to favor the under-display fingerprint sensor, which is equally fast and convenient—something I wish Apple would consider reviving with Touch ID.

Chapter 2: Performance and Battery Life

When it comes to battery performance, I prefer to rely on my everyday usage rather than technical benchmarks. With typical use, including browsing, streaming, and social media, both the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro can last up to two days on a single charge. If you utilize the extreme battery saver mode, you might stretch it to three days, according to Google's claims. They also support fast 30W charging for quick power-ups.

The expectation for modern smartphones is to offer two-day battery life, which has become a standard among Android devices. The standby time on the new Pixels is particularly impressive, likely due to the efficiency of the Tensor G2 chip.

Section 2.1: Camera Capabilities

Camera quality can be subjective, and what appeals to me may not resonate with everyone. However, I have consistently appreciated the image processing that Pixel phones deliver. Although Google tends not to frequently upgrade the camera hardware, they invest heavily in the software.

Pixel 7 camera performance

Both the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro share a 50MP main lens and a 12MP ultra-wide lens, while the 7 Pro includes a 48MP telephoto lens capable of impressive 30x zoom through advanced software.

Both devices feature Google’s innovative photo ‘unblur’ technology, designed to enhance image sharpness. This software can even be applied to older photos taken with different cameras, though results may vary.

For video, both models support 10-bit HDR and 4K recording at 30 and 60fps. Google has also introduced its own version of a cinematic mode, which still requires refinement.

Conclusion: Final Thoughts on the Pixel 7 Series

I am genuinely impressed with the Pixel 7 series. The camera performance aligns perfectly with my preferences, the build quality is exceptional, and the Android experience is unparalleled.

Pixel 7 series overview

When compared to the latest iPhone lineup, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro present a compelling case with their attractive pricing and premium features. Unless you are deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, considering either the Pixel 7 or 7 Pro is worth your time. The 7 Pro is ideal for those seeking a larger phone with top-tier features, while the Pixel 7 offers a balanced choice of size, performance, and price.

If you are looking for a budget option, the Pixel 6a at $399 is an unbeatable deal for a smartphone.
