# The Evolution of Cannabis: A Journey Towards Acceptance and Healing

Chapter 1: Personal Discoveries and Medical Advancements
Like many individuals, my introduction to cannabis occurred during my teenage years, thanks to friends and random party encounters. For someone who has often felt the burdens of anxiety and stress, discovering cannabis—whether referred to as weed, bud, or Mary Jane—was a remarkably uplifting experience.
Medical marijuana has been legalized in the UK since 2018; however, I only learned about it last year, and now it seems that companies offering it are everywhere. Following a virtual doctor's appointment, documentation for my anxiety and IBS, and a couple of fit notes, I was prescribed two different strains of cannabis. It was as straightforward as that.
The professionals behind this initiative are clearly passionate advocates for the positive impact cannabis can have on individuals’ lives. They genuinely want to welcome you into the process, taking the time to understand your unique needs and providing you with a comprehensive menu to help you determine what works best for you.
In my prolonged battle with anxiety and feelings of guilt, I have encountered numerous doctors who simply prescribed pills, often with an indifferent attitude of, "These might help, but who really knows?" This lack of empathy and understanding can be incredibly disheartening.
If you've ever been on medication for mental health issues, you’ll likely relate to my experience. Additionally, we cannot overlook the side effects associated with these drugs: nausea, diarrhea, impotence, insomnia, weight gain, and the frustrating uncertainty of whether your mood and thoughts are influenced by the medication or are genuinely your own.
One of the most significant advantages of medical marijuana lies in its versatility. From oils and capsules to edibles, vapes, and traditional dried buds, there’s a method for everyone to find comfort in consumption. It’s as adaptable as a multi-talented nurse.
They often label cannabis as a "gateway drug." While this notion holds some truth, it is not for the reasons commonly suggested. Cannabis serves as a gateway in the same way that dipping your toes in a shallow pool can lead to deeper waters; you’re embarking on a journey, but it’s a long one!
This perception arises because cannabis is often the first substantial substance encountered, given its accessibility and appeal to young adults, and, frankly, it's quite enjoyable.
In my view, the true gateway drug is alcohol. Yet, society seldom categorizes alcohol as a drug, despite its capacity to ruin lives, inflict lasting harm, and foster addiction.
Having used cannabis for years, I have never felt the slightest temptation to try harder substances. The classification of cannabis alongside destructive drugs like ketamine, crack, and speed is absurd!
As someone who has been reaping the benefits of cannabis for nearly a decade, I often reflect on the chaotic scenes of intoxicated individuals in town on a Saturday night—shouting, harassing, and vomiting in public—and wonder how this behavior is permissible.
In contrast, the thought of enjoying a joint in the comfort of my home while watching a movie is deemed illegal. This reality is perplexing and infuriating.
I eagerly anticipate a future where meeting a friend for a smoke in public is as accepted as sharing a drink. While some nations have already embraced this shift, the UK has much progress to make.
Over 40 countries and 23 states in the USA have either fully legalized cannabis or permitted it for medical purposes. I hope that others follow suit, allowing millions more to benefit from its healing properties—whether those individuals are grappling with debilitating illnesses or simply seeking recreational relief.
Consider researching whether your country offers medical cannabis and how it could assist you in managing life's overwhelming challenges.
