Have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution only to see it fade away by February? Do you often set goals only to forget about them? If you find it challenging to stick to your goals, you’re not alone. Many resolutions fail within the first few months, often due to a few key reasons:

  • Goals that are overly ambitious
  • Goals that lack clarity
  • Attempting to pursue too many goals simultaneously

These factors can hinder progress, making it hard to devise a practical plan for achieving your objectives. For instance, aiming to shed 30 pounds in a month is unrealistic and could lead to unhealthy practices.

On the other hand, a vague goal like “I want to get fit” lacks specificity, making it challenging to track your progress. You might improve your fitness level, but without clear metrics, you may feel like you haven’t accomplished anything.

Moreover, trying to tackle multiple goals at once can be overwhelming. Research suggests that it takes around 28 days to establish a new habit, so setting too many goals concurrently can lead to frustration.

To avoid the common pitfalls that lead to early abandonment of resolutions, it’s essential to approach goal setting with a strategy that fosters success. Remember, you can initiate a new goal at any time—there's no need to wait for a new year or significant event.

SMART Goals Framework

A widely recognized method for effective goal setting is the SMART framework, which helps steer clear of typical mistakes. SMART stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable/Meaningful
  • Achievable/As If Now
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound

When establishing a goal, ensure it is as detailed as possible. For instance, “I will lose 30 pounds by lifting weights by September 30, 2023,” provides clarity on your objectives and timeline.

Measurability is crucial. For example, “I will read 12 books in 2023” allows you to track your progress.

A meaningful goal must resonate with you personally. It should not be a target imposed by others, as this lack of genuine desire can lead to failure.

Achievability means your goal should be realistic within your current circumstances. For weight loss, ensure your target is manageable. Likewise, don’t overcommit to reading; set a reasonable number of books to avoid disappointment.

The “As If Now” principle encourages you to frame your goals in the present tense. For instance, saying, “I have lost 30 pounds by September 30” can motivate your subconscious to act as if your goal has already been achieved.

Realism is akin to achievability; avoid setting impossible goals, like inventing teleportation without a scientific background. Start with smaller, attainable goals, such as pursuing a degree in science.

Lastly, a time-bound goal includes a deadline. Leaving goals open-ended can lead to procrastination. By specifying dates, you're more likely to prioritize your objectives and take action.

How Many Goals Should You Set?

If you’re new to goal setting, it’s wise to start with no more than three objectives at a time. This approach prevents feeling overwhelmed by the desire to transform your entire life all at once.

I typically categorize my goals into areas such as:

  • Health & Fitness
  • Family
  • Career or Education
  • Personal Growth

Feel free to create categories that resonate with you. If your health is already in good shape, for instance, you might want to focus on work or personal development.

Once you become accustomed to setting and achieving goals, you can gradually increase the number. For example, I set 11 goals for 2023 and have already completed one.

As you accomplish your goals, feel free to challenge yourself with new and more ambitious ones.

I hope you find this goal-setting approach beneficial, as many others, including myself, have. Best of luck with your aspirations!
