Chapter 1: Experiencing Bliss
When we talk about extreme experiences, we don't mean risky adventures; rather, we refer to those extraordinary moments of joy, euphoria, and deep connection that we can occasionally encounter. These intense emotions, though brief, can arise from profound feelings—such as true love, the birth of a child, or the bond with our children. Despite their fleeting nature, these moments can have enduring impacts, revealing insights about our identity, purpose, and resilience. They can empower us to tackle future challenges, inspire us, and ultimately enhance our happiness.
"Wherever you go, go with all your heart." — Confucius
Can you recall one or two of your own extreme moments? What steps can you take to create more of these experiences in your life?
PRACTICE
These powerful experiences can indeed catalyze significant life changes. To help sustain their positive effects, consider following a protocol developed in a study by psychologists C. Burton and L. King. Participants in this study engaged in daily writing sessions for three consecutive days, dedicating 15 minutes each day to reflect on their intense experiences. The findings indicated that those who participated reported a higher state of overall well-being compared to a control group who did not engage in the exercise.
Here are the guidelines provided to the participants:
- Reflect on the most extraordinary moment you've experienced thus far. Whether it was a single event or multiple instances of joy and ecstasy—choose a memory that resonates with you. This could stem from love, a song, a book, or a burst of creativity.
- Picture that moment vividly. Relive the emotions you felt, and jot down everything that comes to mind.
- Organize your thoughts into categories: feelings, thoughts, and emotions.
- Strive for accuracy in re-experiencing that significant moment from your life.
This week, dedicate 15 minutes each day to this practice. For days two and three, you can either revisit the same event or select a different one.
Personal Story:
In my own experience, one of the most profound moments occurred while I was gazing at a Mondrian painting. I can't quite explain it, but I found myself captivated for nearly an hour, moved to tears in the museum as I absorbed its beauty. I was just 16 at the time, yet the memory remains vivid and powerful, sending chills down my spine even now.
"The greatest use of a life is to spend it on something that will outlast it." — William James
Don't forget to incorporate a gratitude practice into your routine. While weekly check-ins are beneficial, I recommend committing to a daily gratitude session. Just 10 minutes before sleep can significantly improve your rest and overall well-being.
