Celebrating Friendship: A Day to Remember Our Closest Bonds
Written on
The Importance of Friendship
Friendship plays a vital role in our happiness, deserving our recognition and gratitude. While time spent together and vulnerability are crucial elements of friendship, we should also prioritize expressing our appreciation. So today, reach out to a friend and let them know how much they mean to you. We often overlook the significance of our friendships.
Did you know that yesterday was officially Friend Day?
It may not have been marked on your digital calendars or celebrated with greeting cards, and your friends might not have remembered to acknowledge it with gifts. But don't be too hard on them—or yourself—since this day is a concept I just created.
However, it's worth pondering why we don't have a dedicated day to honor friendship. While other relationships hold their own importance, the wisdom of ancient Hebrew teachings reminds us that a true friend is often closer than a brother.
Choosing Our Friends
Unlike siblings, whom we may or may not have, friendships are a choice. There's also a unique selection process among friends, which could be seen as "survival of the stickiest." During challenging times, some friends may not be there for us, proving they lack that 'sticky' quality. Thankfully, we have friends who stand by us through thick and thin.
These are the ones we can rely on during the late hours, the ones who genuinely ask, "What do you need?" They help us bounce back from poor decisions without judgment. While they hold us accountable to our values, they do so with kindness and respect.
Building Strong Foundations
In the early phases of friendship, spending ample time together is key. However, a strong friendship can endure long separations and pick up right where it left off when reconnected. It's important to note that time alone isn’t sufficient for friendship to thrive; it also demands vulnerability.
With close friends, we can express our thoughts without the fear of being judged. We can share our grievances, confessions, and secrets openly. Unlike casual acquaintances, where we often keep score of give and take, true friends can give freely and accept graciously.
Having differing opinions is not a detriment but rather a benefit in close friendships. It’s invaluable to have someone you trust who can offer a fresh perspective on life.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate our close friends. A simple note or hug can go a long way. Remember, today is also a day to celebrate friendship.
