After a lengthy period of anticipation and multiple delays, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has recently announced on Twitter that the highly anticipated Tesla Semi project is nearing completion and will begin deliveries by the end of 2022. The Tesla Semi represents an all-electric trucking solution equipped with impressive battery capabilities.

Musk initially introduced the concept of the Tesla Semi in his Master Plan II back in 2016. He highlighted the necessity for this vehicle, stating, “Beyond consumer vehicles, there are two additional electric vehicle categories required: heavy-duty trucks and high-capacity urban transport. The Tesla Semi began accepting orders in 2017, with production originally slated for 2019. At that time, the projected price for each unit ranged between $150,000 and $200,000. However, repeated delays have pushed back the timeline to where we are today.

Recent reports from Electrek's Fred Lambert indicate that Musk has confirmed via his personal Twitter that the first Tesla Semis are expected to be delivered by the end of this year.

While the exact number of reservations for the Semi remains unclear, one notable customer is PepsiCo, which placed an order for 100 trucks in 2017 to help transition their fleet to electric. These trucks are particularly crucial for PepsiCo’s efforts to transform their Frito Lay factory in Modesto, California, into a zero-emissions facility.

With the Tesla Semi promising a range of 500 miles per charge, their deployment could mark a significant shift towards more sustainable and eco-friendly freight transport across the United States.

Nonetheless, as pointed out by InsideEVs' Mark Kane, there are still many uncertainties surrounding the Tesla Semi. There has been no confirmation regarding whether the pricing remains consistent with the estimates provided five years ago. Additionally, details about the battery types and other specifications have not yet been disclosed.

Although Musk's tweet seems to be the only detail currently available about the Tesla Semis, it suggests that initial customers will soon start receiving their trucks. If PepsiCo is among the first, Lambert has reported that the company has already prepared by installing a Megacharger station at their Modesto facility in 2021.
