Should You Hold Off on the 2023 iPhones for USB-C?

Understanding Apple's Connector Choices
As the release of the iPhone 14 approaches, many are contemplating whether to skip this year's model in favor of the anticipated iPhone 15, which is rumored to feature a USB-C port. Recently, I discussed the question, "Why Does Apple Prefer Lightning Over USB-C?" Various reports suggested that Apple would not adopt USB-C for their devices, citing reasons like the current adoption rate of the Lightning connector, environmental considerations, a focus on wireless technology, and the MFi program. You can revisit that discussion in the link below.
Why Does Apple Still Choose Lightning Over USB-C For iPhones? The hidden truths you might not be aware of.
Not too long ago, Ming-Chi Kuo, a trusted Apple analyst, made a surprising announcement that caught the attention of Apple enthusiasts globally:
Kuo also noted that all Apple devices currently using Lightning connectors, including AirPods and the Magic Mouse, are expected to transition to USB-C.
Further insights were shared by Mark Gurman:
Why is this news so shocking? Kuo had previously warned that adopting USB-C could adversely affect the MFi program and that Apple had concerns regarding USB-C’s water resistance compared to Lightning. However, he appears to have altered his stance, indicating that circumstances may have changed.
What could have prompted this shift? There are numerous theories, one being the European Union's push for a universal USB-C standard for all smartphones, which I mentioned in my earlier piece. Yet, it's essential to remain cautious, as leaks and rumors can often lead to inaccuracies, as seen in past announcements.
Additionally, while Kuo mentioned he based his statements on a "latest survey," the specifics of this survey remain vague. It’s unclear which demographic he studied, although he typically relies on supply chain insights.
Should You Wait for the iPhone 15?
If you own an older model like the iPhone 11 or earlier, it may not be wise to hold off until 2023 for an upgrade. If you’ve been delaying your upgrade, this year could be the perfect opportunity. Consider your needs versus wants. Don’t postpone an upgrade if you genuinely need it; your phone is an integral part of daily life, and comfort should take precedence. Conversely, if your device is in good condition and your motivation for upgrading is solely the prospect of USB-C, you might want to take a gamble and see if the rumors are substantiated.
As someone with an iPhone XR, I personally wouldn’t wait for the USB-C iPhone 15. The Lightning connector has proven reliable for both charging and data transfer. While it’s true that Lightning is slower than USB-C, if Apple enhances its connector speeds to USB 3.0, that could address speed concerns. Furthermore, many Apple users likely possess multiple Lightning cables, making it more environmentally friendly to continue using the same connector.
It will be intriguing to see how this situation unfolds in the coming months.
