Resilience and Reflection: Insights from Working as a Key Worker

Chapter 1: Introduction to the Pandemic Experience
The Coronavirus pandemic has had a profound impact on lives around the globe. Here’s a personal reflection on what it has meant to work in a public setting during this challenging time.
Now, to clarify, I don’t categorize myself as a 'key worker'—I’m a part-time supermarket assistant in the UK, which helps me as I pursue my master's degree. I believe the term should apply to those who risk their lives directly, such as healthcare professionals, especially during the height of the pandemic and as we slowly emerge from it. However, the UK government defines 'essential workers' as those involved in the "sale and delivery" of food and necessary goods, so according to that definition, I suppose I fit into that category during this period. The virus has touched nearly everyone’s life in some way, with some experiencing significant loss or disruption and others grappling with the absence of previously taken-for-granted freedoms. Nevertheless, humanity has shown its ability to adapt, with many individuals going above and beyond to support their communities during these uncertain times.
Now, I would like to share five key insights I gained while working in public during the pandemic:
Job Satisfaction:
Having worked at the supermarket for nearly seven years, I never found the job particularly fulfilling, beyond the financial aspect. It often left me feeling unmotivated, especially as a student facing financial constraints. However, the onset of COVID-19 changed my perspective. Suddenly, my role transformed from just a source of income to a vital service as customers rushed to stock up on essentials like toilet paper and eggs. Heartbreaking stories emerged about healthcare workers and vulnerable individuals who struggled to find necessary products. I realized the main issue for supermarkets wasn’t a lack of stock, but rather the inability to restock shelves quickly enough due to reduced staff availability. This experience ignited a sense of purpose within me; I was determined to do my utmost to support my colleagues and the community during this challenging time.
People's Willingness to Adapt:
Initially, there was some hesitation among both customers and employees to embrace new safety protocols, and even now some struggle with compliance. However, the speed with which most adapted to social distancing guidelines was remarkable. In the UK, maintaining a two-meter distance became crucial, especially in crowded places like supermarkets. Given the demographic of my community, which includes many elderly residents, adhering to these guidelines was vital. Most customers made an effort to respect our space, often covering their mouths when speaking to us. I witnessed customers lining up patiently outside, demonstrating resilience and humor even in the face of unpredictable weather. This collective effort showcased a commitment to ensuring the safety of supermarket staff.
A Thank You Goes a Long Way:
While expressing gratitude should be a norm regardless of circumstances, the pandemic underscored the importance of recognizing those who often go unnoticed, such as bus drivers, waste collectors, and delivery personnel. From my perspective as a shop assistant, receiving a simple "thank you" from a customer was incredibly heartwarming. This experience taught me that even in a rush, taking a moment to appreciate someone’s efforts can significantly uplift their day. The pandemic has encouraged many to acknowledge the value of those performing essential roles, a trend I hope continues as restrictions ease.
Inadequate Protection for Key Workers:
While I have shared positive observations, it’s essential to address a critical issue: the lack of adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) for supermarket staff. Following the lockdown on March 23rd, it took nearly two months for us to receive appropriate PPE. Initially, we were provided only basic masks and hand sanitizer, which were insufficient given the circumstances. Tension arose between staff and management as we voiced our concerns over our safety. Despite the difficult circumstances, the need for better PPE was evident, particularly as some staff contracted the virus. The supermarket was a community hub during the lockdown, and better protective measures could have potentially mitigated the virus’s spread.
Renewed Faith in Humanity:
I conclude with a personal story that revitalized my belief in human kindness. During the pandemic, my employer made a controversial decision regarding staff from another branch who were offered the choice between working in the supermarket or taking a furlough at full pay. It was no surprise that many opted for the latter. However, two individuals chose to join us in the supermarket, despite the risks involved. Their decision to support their colleagues instead of taking an easier route significantly boosted team morale. While many heroic acts deserve recognition, their choice stands out to me as a testament to selflessness during challenging times.
