The legacy of Alexander the Great, known as the Macedonian, continues to captivate historians and enthusiasts alike. His notable achievements stem from a series of extensive conquests over 11 years, which took him through Western Asia, Egypt, and into the heart of Central Asia, reaching the Indus Valley—where he ascended to kingship.
For those intrigued by Alexander's story, a trip to Greece is highly recommended this year. This sunny Mediterranean country is likely to be a top destination for many travelers. While islands like Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu are popular, the interior of Greece deserves attention as well. Cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki are well-known, but the historical town of Aigai is set to gain recognition in the coming months.
Section 1.1: Aigai Palace - A Journey into the Past
At this site lies the ruins of the palace where Alexander the Great was crowned. The structure dates back over 2,300 years and had been closed for renovations for the past 16 years. Now, it is once again open to the public. The renovation, which cost more than 20 million euros, restored this UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Aigai Palace is situated in northern Greece, nestled between the towns of Palatitsia and Vergina. Covering nearly 15,000 square meters, it was once the largest building in the region during ancient Greece. Constructed by Alexander's father, Philip II, in the 4th century BCE, it served as the residence for the Argead dynasty of ancient Macedonia. The palace faced destruction at the hands of the Romans in 148 BCE, which marked the beginning of a period of looting.

The Aigai Palace has undergone significant transformations over the centuries. Once characterized by expansive courtyards, impressive columns, sacred spaces, and grand banquet halls, the site has been meticulously reconstructed by archaeologists. Through a careful blend of original stones and replicas, the site has regained its former glory. Archaeologist Angeliki Kottaridi played a crucial role in this restoration, having been involved since her student days.
Kottaridi shared her passion during the ceremonial reopening, stating, “What you discover is stones scattered in the ground and here and there pieces of mosaic. Then you have to put it all together, and that’s the true joy of the researcher.”
Chapter 2: Cultural Heritage and Archaeological Importance
In preparation for the monument's reopening, researchers built upon the findings of esteemed Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos. In the late 1970s, he uncovered a trove of royal Macedonian artifacts, including gold and silver weaponry and burial sites, one of which is believed to contain the remains of Philip, the father of Alexander the Great.
According to UNESCO, the Aigai Palace stands as one of the most significant archaeological locations in Europe, symbolizing a vital phase in the evolution of European civilization from classical city-states to Hellenistic imperial structures. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis underscored the importance of safeguarding this cultural heritage during the inauguration, stating, “As custodians of this valuable cultural heritage, we must protect, emphasize, promote, and at the same time expand the horizons revealed by each new aspect.”
