Nostalgia for Technology: A Journey Through Time and Memory

Chapter 1: A Surprising Trip Down Memory Lane
Today, I found myself unexpectedly reminiscing about the past. While searching through a box of photographs, I stumbled upon a compact disc. As I dug deeper, I uncovered three more discs, triggering a wave of nostalgia. It struck me not just that I had forgotten about these CDs, but also that we used to frequently store our photos on them.
In the earlier days of digital photography, when we developed film, we often opted to receive a CD alongside our printed photos. The extra cost was minimal, making it a convenient choice. As digital cameras became affordable, I transitioned to taking pictures without needing to develop them. However, school photos still came on CDs, and family members would send me countless pictures through the mail on discs, ensuring we could access them anytime without worrying about wear and tear.
I never imagined that these once-cherished formats would one day become obsolete.
A few years later, mobile phones equipped with cameras took over. These devices improved rapidly, leaving my digital camera in the dust. In tandem, CD drives on computers faded into history.
As I held those CDs in my hands, it dawned on me that I no longer had a device to view them. I had upgraded my desktop last year and completely overlooked the need for a CD drive. It hadn’t even crossed my mind until I remembered my writing laptop from 2014 still had one.
With a bit of effort, I managed to open the drive and secure the disc in place. The moment I clicked ‘open’ on the screen, the drive whirred loudly, almost startling the birds outside. To my relief, the photos appeared in vibrant colors. I quickly transferred them to a thumb drive and then copied them to my desktop folder.
Next on my agenda is backing them up in the cloud, just in case my computer fails and I lose access to the hard drive. I also plan to check other boxes of photos to see if I have more discs hidden away.
It’s strange how something from just fifteen years ago can make me feel so old. I’ve witnessed an entire technological cycle—the rise and fall of CDs that now seem like a fleeting moment in our digital timeline.
As I contemplated this, I noticed some 3.5” floppy disks and wondered what memories might be stored on them. At this point, they may require a specialized service to access, but they serve a purpose by stabilizing my husband’s grandfather’s cabinet.
