Navigating the Shift: The Rise of Artificial Intelligence in Writing

Chapter 1: The Coming of AI in Writing

When did we start defining intelligence as artificial?

It seems that the evolution of artificial intelligence is upon us, and it’s not a distant future—it's just around the corner. This transformation is inevitable, and I'm eagerly anticipating the day when we fully embrace it. However, this isn't a dire warning about a looming system that will strip us of our freedoms and humanity. While the potential for such scenarios exists, I remain skeptical about their likelihood.

I find myself pondering the trajectory of honesty and legitimacy in our content creation. Will we be able to differentiate between human-generated and AI-generated content? You might chuckle and dismiss my concerns, thinking, "Oh, come on, Mark. This is just the beginning." Indeed, we are on the cusp of a new era, equipped with the tools, knowledge, and capability to advance rapidly. The line between what is natural and what is artificial is only going to blur further over time.

Recent generative AI models certainly indicate the capabilities of artificial intelligence. Although they still have limitations, the advancements are remarkable and continue to improve at an astonishing rate. The online landscape, particularly on platforms like Medium, is already experiencing an influx of AI-generated content. Unscrupulous writers are finding shortcuts to create mediocre work without needing any genuine writing skills.

For instance, I can produce a sentence in Swedish:

Jag är en dålig författare, men jag kan forma en mening.

Yet, any observant reader will quickly identify the telltale signs of AI-generated text. The patterns are clear, with significant repetition and a distinct lack of human touch.

Moreover, the accounts that produce this content often lack depth. Their fraudulent nature is obvious, as many of them do not even attempt to refine their output or engage with their audience meaningfully. Instead, they often resort to mass interactions, simply highlighting or clapping for countless posts, or adding random stories to their reading lists in hopes of gaining follow-backs.

When they do comment, it tends to be generic and unoriginal—almost robotic in nature. Yet, there is one area where they excel: gaining access to publications. They know how to request membership in a polite manner, as failing to do so could lead to rejection. The more publications they infiltrate, the easier it is for them to spread their presence.

After securing a spot, however, genuine interaction is minimal. It becomes a mere numbers game. I once accepted a bot into my publication, a supposed poet. As many are aware, large language models can produce poetry quite effectively. However, I quickly noticed that the first poem submitted was generated by AI.

Upon investigating further, I found that the account was bombarding various publications with AI-generated poetry multiple times a day. I left a private note suggesting that I might consider their work if they disclosed the use of AI. Unfortunately, there was no response. I received another submission shortly after, which I rejected, again leaving a note with no reply. The third submission? Out you go, Mr. AI poet. Goodbye!

I refuse to entertain these robotic accounts in my publication. I have no interest in AI content unless it is transparently created, engaging, and not solely produced by an algorithm. I understand that AI can have valuable applications, and it can indeed be wonderful if utilized correctly. However, I firmly believe that platforms like Medium are not suitable for it—at least not in my publication.

I may not have explicitly stated this in my guidelines, which is my oversight. However, I did express my desire for honesty, and that certainly doesn't include disingenuous content.

Psst! Hey there!

Chapter 2: The Impact of AI on Authenticity

In the realm of music, the evolution of AI is also reflected in creative expression. For instance, Elvie Shane's "My Boy" showcases a blend of heartfelt lyrics and modern production techniques, illustrating how technology can enhance artistry while maintaining emotional depth.

Erasure's "Oh L'Amour" offers another perspective, marrying classic sound with contemporary themes, reminding us that even as technology advances, the essence of human experience remains paramount.
