Navigating Life Milestones: The Scenic Route of Millennials

Written on

Chapter 1: The Evolving Definition of Milestones

In a not-so-distant era, life’s path appeared straightforward: graduate, secure a job, marry, buy a house, and start a family. However, as I approach my 30s, it seems that many of those boxes remain unchecked. This raises the question: why do so many of us postpone milestones that were once deemed essential? Perhaps the more relevant inquiry is why we still regard these as “milestones” today.

This brings us to the pivotal decade of our 20s, often characterized as a time for self-discovery. I certainly experienced this — filled with laughter, heartbreak, questionable fashion choices, and aspirations that didn’t come to fruition as planned. It was, in many ways, both a remarkable and tumultuous time.

While many of my peers appeared to be on a clear trajectory, swiftly landing their dream jobs, marrying early, and sharing perfectly curated baby announcements, I was still mastering the art of keeping a cactus alive.

Section 1.1: Embracing Life's Unpredictability

Life seldom adheres to our blueprints. I’ve encountered setbacks, including job losses and failed relationships. Yet, these challenges imparted invaluable lessons that no academic institution could teach.

I’ve learned that resilience is not merely a trendy term; it serves as the support system that sustains us when everything else falters. It embodies the courage to rise after being knocked down repeatedly.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Roller Coaster of Love

When discussing setbacks, love certainly deserves attention. I’ve experienced the thrills and heartbreaks of dating — a roller coaster where the ride can be both exhilarating and nauseating.

In this era, finding a partner is both straightforward and complex. With dating apps, a simple swipe can connect you with your "ideal match" or a complete mismatch. I’ve encountered both. Yet, more often than not, I pressed pause on serious relationships. Why? Because I was still on a journey of self-exploration — discovering my desires, needs, and aspirations. And that’s perfectly fine; I wasn’t ready to commit to forever when I was still uncertain about my present.

Section 1.2: The Pressure of Societal Expectations

Upon hitting 30, societal pressures can feel overwhelming, as if a timer is counting down, urging you to settle down. Family gatherings often turn into interrogation sessions with questions like, “Any exciting updates?” or “When will we see grandchildren?”

This familiar script can weigh heavily, leading some friends to make premature decisions that don’t align with their true readiness. But why conform to an outdated timeline that may not even be relevant?

Chapter 2: Redefining Success and Happiness

Life is not a race, and even if it were, we’re all on distinct paths. The essence of contemporary life is that we can redefine success and happiness on our own terms.

Whether it’s waiting until you’re 40 to purchase your first home, starting a family in your late 30s or 40s, or pursuing education or new careers later in life, it’s essential to remember: it’s your journey, and you determine your milestones and their timing.

Freedom versus Security

While security is undeniably vital, the freedom to make choices that resonate with your true self is a privilege we should cherish. I have relished the freedom during this “delay” period — the freedom to travel solo, immerse myself in diverse cultures, and explore career paths without the constraints of a mortgage or family responsibilities. It’s also a time to learn from mistakes and emerge stronger.

When It’s Right, It’s Right

I know that a day will come when I meet someone who complements my life as I do theirs. A time when adult responsibilities will feel less like burdens and more like enriching shared experiences. I’m not rushing this process; I’ve learned to trust life’s timing.

So, Where Does This Leave Us?

As a generation, we prioritize experiences over material possessions, emotional intelligence over societal norms, and self-love over societal pressure. While it may appear that we are lagging in the so-called “race of life,” perhaps we are the ones who truly understand what is important.

So, if you find yourself delaying those traditional milestones, remember — it’s not a delay; it’s a choice. This choice may lead to a more fulfilling life than you ever envisioned.

Let’s celebrate the detours, setbacks, and future milestones. If life is indeed a journey, I would rather take the scenic route than be caught in a traffic jam. And perhaps, this scenic route is the shortcut we never realized we needed.

A discussion on why taking time to grow and learn in adulthood can be beneficial, highlighting the value of slow-adulting.
