A Fresh Perspective on Achieving Career Success

Chapter 1: Reflections on Career Success
After dedicating nearly three decades to the medical genetic testing sector, my understanding of what constitutes career success has evolved significantly.
In the beginning, I spent eleven years as an employee, where my passion for the clinical aspects of my work drove me to learn and ascend the professional ladder. However, I encountered unexpected challenges, including office politics and power struggles. My effectiveness sometimes made others look unfavorable, leading to conflicts that took a toll on my mental and physical health. I often questioned the organization's purpose and why we didn't prioritize offering the best service to our clinicians.
In 2006, four colleagues and I took a bold step to establish our own company with a mission to improve service quality. The initial three years were fraught with difficulties; our naivety in planning led to numerous failures. At one point, we nearly depleted our funds! However, it was our vision and adaptability that carried us through, and we are now successfully serving clients both nationally and internationally.
Throughout these years, I can identify several pivotal moments that I would classify as career success.
When adversity strikes, take action.
The environment at my previous workplace was challenging and far from pleasant. We chose not to endure it and instead created a positive alternative. Despite our early missteps, our intentions were genuine, and our commitment to change fueled our growth during those trying times. We took a leap of faith, risked everything, and ultimately triumphed.
Embrace challenges for growth.
The difficult early years became invaluable. They reminded me of raw carbon being compressed into a diamond. In life, the easiest paths seldom foster growth. It is often through facing challenges that we evolve, becoming stronger and wiser in the process.
Building relationships is key in business.
As a trained medical scientist, I had minimal experience in business and customer relations. As a new business owner, I needed to secure clients. I vividly remember making a cold call to the head clinician of a medical laboratory, only to embarrass myself when my business cards tumbled out of my briefcase. Despite this shaky start, I persevered.
Fast forward nearly seventeen years, and I now genuinely enjoy meeting our customers. I’ve learned that trust and confidence take time to build; there are no shortcuts. When I interact with clients today, I focus on them as individuals, acknowledging their needs and triumphs. I engage in personal conversations beyond work, sharing interests like sports and celebrating milestones together. Our clients are more than just revenue; they are real people with whom we build meaningful connections.
Fostering team growth.
As founders, my partners and I established the initial structure of our company and became accustomed to doing things a certain way. However, as we expanded, we realized that our previous methods were no longer effective. Letting go was challenging, but we understood it was essential for the company’s growth. Our successors embraced new opportunities, allowing them to shine and advance their careers.
Finding work-life harmony.
The concept of "work-life balance" is something I have struggled to fully grasp. It suggests a separation between work and personal life, a notion that worked during my employee days but became convoluted once I became a business owner. I found myself constantly thinking about work, even at home, and I questioned the validity of maintaining such strict boundaries. For me, work is intertwined with my identity and passions, and I find joy in my work rather than viewing it as a burden.
Time is a precious commodity. For several years, I was a “Jack of all trades,” often working 12 to 16 hours daily. When I married in 2018, my wife expressed feelings of being a "work widow," which was a wake-up call. I consulted with my senior team and decided to reduce my hours to a more manageable 8 to 10 per day. This change allowed me to balance my responsibilities better and prioritize my family.
The bigger picture beyond profit.
While I am not naive about the financial aspects of running a business, I believe there is more to success than just profit. We strive to create meaningful choices for our customers and foster strong connections with them. Our staff is valued, and we prioritize caring for one another.
I hope that, in the end, people will remember me as someone who had the courage to build a company alongside my team. We envisioned a better future, adapted to challenges, and cared deeply for our customers and staff. My passions for faith, family, triathlons, and even Star Wars, shaped who I am. I aim to ensure my company supports both its employees and stakeholders while always having time for those who matter.
