Chapter 1: Introduction to Week Twenty-Seven
Welcome to the twenty-seventh week of our 2024 Writing Prompt Journey! This week, you’ll find three brand new prompts along with two words or concepts for each that you might consider incorporating into your poems if you’re seeking an added challenge.
If these prompts don’t spark your imagination but the accompanying images inspire you in a different direction, feel free to follow wherever your creativity leads! Your poems can take any form and utilize any poetic devices. Here are a few suggested poetic styles to inspire your writing:
- Limerick: A five-line poem with an AABBA rhyme scheme, typically telling a brief and humorous story. Lines one, two, and five usually contain eight or nine syllables, while lines three and four consist of five or six syllables. The meter pattern looks like this: Line 1: u S u u S u u S | Line 2: u S u u S u u S | Line 3: u S u u S | Line 4: u S u u S | Line 5: u S u u S u u S.
- Rhyming Ballad: Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s "The Raven," this style features stanzas of six lines each, with a rhyme scheme of ABCBBB. Lines typically have eight feet, or sixteen syllables alternating between stressed and unstressed syllables.
- Senryu: A Japanese form akin to a haiku but focusing on human experience and emotions, structured with 5-7-5 syllables.
