# Apple Studio Display Review: Is It Worth the Investment?

Written on

Chapter 1: Overview of the Studio Display

The Apple Studio Display was launched earlier this year, and since its arrival, I have utilized it nearly every day. However, it appears that not all users share my enthusiasm. The high price of the Studio Display positions it as a premium monitor, and with that cost, expectations are naturally elevated. Unfortunately, from the start, several issues have arisen.

Among the most notable problems has been the camera quality, which, to be frank, remains subpar. Users have reported a persistent high-pitched whine and various audio issues. Although firmware updates have improved some functionality, it's evident that Apple could have better prepared the product prior to its release. Was its launch rushed to coincide with the Studio Mac at this spring's Peek Performance event? It's hard to say. Still, having waited years for a reasonably priced Apple monitor, I am genuinely pleased with my decision after almost six months of daily use.

Section 1.1: Design Aesthetics

While opinions on design can vary, I firmly believe that the Studio Display's design is one of its standout features. Apple products are often tailored for specific users and environments. Take the 24-inch iMac, for example; its vibrant colors are clearly aimed at a non-professional audience. It is often found adorning student desks, hair salons, or restaurant entrances.

In contrast, the Studio Display was launched alongside the Mac Studio, targeting a more professional user base. Its all-aluminum construction, sleek lines, and minimalistic design exude professionalism. The stand, despite facing some criticism, is a beautifully engineered component. Although it would have been ideal for Apple to include basic height and tilt adjustments, the standard stand operates smoothly and feels premium. The exterior is intentionally designed to be streamlined and devoid of controls, as everything is managed through your connected Mac.

Section 1.2: Integration with the Apple Ecosystem

For those deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem, the Studio Display offers significant advantages. Its performance is seamlessly integrated with other Apple devices. The wake-up from sleep is incredibly quick, and managing connected AirPlay and Bluetooth devices is a breeze. Brightness, volume, and control center features function reliably, with no issues experienced over six months—no dropouts or frozen screens. While it may cost more than options like the LG 5K Ultrafine, the Studio Display justifies its price through consistent daily performance.

By the way, the name "Studio Display" is a masterstroke. Unlike competitors that often use confusing numbers and codes, Apple's straightforward naming ensures that it is easily remembered—much like iconic figures such as Elvis or Madonna.

Chapter 2: Evaluating Cost and Value

The topic of cost is often contentious. Value can be quite subjective, and while I acknowledge the Studio Display's premium pricing, it deserves to be compared to similar products in the market. The LG Ultrafine 5K monitor serves as a relevant benchmark, priced only $200 less. That modest savings comes with compromises in build quality, such as the cheap plastic and noise associated with the LG model.

To illustrate, consider the comparison between luxury cars like Bentley and Maybach. It’s challenging to argue about value at that price point, but if you're seeking top-tier quality, those are the comparisons that matter. Similarly, while cheaper 4K or 5K monitors exist, few can rival the Studio Display's 27-inch aluminum Retina display. The adage “you get what you pay for” rings true here as well, making the Studio Display a worthwhile investment for those who appreciate its features.

Section 2.1: Superior Color Quality

The primary reason to purchase this display is the exceptional color accuracy it offers. Out of the box, the Studio Display is color calibrated by Apple’s engineers. With a resolution of 5120×2880, it boasts nearly double the resolution of 4K, which is evident when working with text and images. Once accustomed to this pixel density, it’s hard to revert to a non-Retina display.

The Studio Display provides P3 wide color support, enabling up to one billion colors and a brightness of 600 nits. This brightness is particularly beneficial for those working with images and videos, enhancing productivity and comfort. While the display refresh rate is 60Hz rather than 120Hz, and it lacks local dimming zones, these factors have not detracted from my experience. For true HDR content, I appreciate having both the Studio Display and my MacBook Pro available for detailed editing.

Section 2.2: Audio and Camera Features

For the price, the Studio Display includes several useful features, including a webcam, microphones, and speakers. These components are adequate for online meetings and everyday media consumption. The six-speaker system performs well for podcasts and music, supporting Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos.

However, the webcam leaves much to be desired. Although firmware updates have improved its performance, I opted for a Logitech Brio 4K camera instead. While the internal microphones are functional, they do not match professional studio quality.

Chapter 3: The Drawbacks

One significant drawback is the non-detachable power cord. I find it perplexing that Apple decided on this design choice. For instance, when I wanted to move the Studio Display to another location, I struggled to disconnect it due to the tight space behind my desk. If the cord had been removable, the entire process would have taken just a couple of minutes instead of nearly twenty.

Wrapping Up

It’s essential to acknowledge that the Studio Display carries a premium price tag and may not suit everyone’s needs. For those in search of an affordable secondary monitor, numerous 4K options are available that may be more appropriate.

However, for professionals concerned about consistent color accuracy and quality, visiting a local store to experience the display firsthand is advisable. The design, Retina panel, and 5K capabilities have consistently impressed me over time.

While the LG Ultrafine is a solid choice, the long-term benefits of the Studio Display far outweigh the initial cost. Its aesthetic appeal can also spark creativity. Although the built-in peripherals have their flaws, they are sufficient for daily use, with only the camera continuing to disappoint.

Have you purchased a Studio Display? What has your experience been? Have you encountered any of the reported issues, such as audio problems or camera quality?
