# Understanding Core Beliefs: A Personal Journey of Growth

To grasp the concept of core beliefs, I reflected on their origins. When we enter this world, we do so without the ability to discern, forming our self-image largely based on the treatment we receive from caregivers. This period lays the groundwork for our core beliefs, which are designed to provide stability throughout our lives.

I often envision these beliefs as the base of a pyramid. The strength and stability of this pyramid indicate how resilient a person will be when faced with life's challenges. In this analogy, encountering a “trigger” is akin to dislodging a brick from the pyramid's foundation. As a result, the structure becomes less stable, impacting everything built upon that core belief.

The role of parents is crucial in shaping this foundational structure. From a tender age, children rely on their parents to interpret their experiences. A parent’s responses to a child's needs, successes, and failures significantly influence how the child perceives themselves and the world around them.

Nurturing and supportive parents instill a resilient and positive foundation. Their consistent love and encouragement enable children to see themselves as capable and deserving of respect. Such a background fosters confidence and a sense of security in navigating the world.

Conversely, critical or neglectful parenting can lead to a fragile foundation. Children raised in such environments may develop beliefs of inferiority or unworthiness, resulting in a less stable internal pyramid. These individuals might find themselves easily shaken by life's challenges, with the risk of their foundational beliefs collapsing under pressure.

It’s vital to recognize that parents themselves are not immune to their own beliefs and past experiences. This cycle of belief transmission means that the stability of one’s pyramid may mirror that of their parents.

While my focus is on adults seeking to understand and reshape their beliefs, I initially felt something was missing. This led me to explore the process of altering my core beliefs from a new angle.

Imagine a person dressed in layers. The clothes closest to the skin symbolize the values instilled by parents, designed for protection. As we grow and gain experience, we often add new layers on top of the old. This metaphor helped me see things more clearly: the clothing represents beliefs, and my parents provided what they thought was best for my safety.

As we accumulate layers, we might feel weighed down and start questioning the need for certain beliefs. This reflection prompted me to ask, “Have I ever truly seen myself beneath these layers?”

This realization highlighted my lack of self-awareness hidden beneath the beliefs I had adopted over time. Gaining a fresh perspective on my core beliefs made me understand the vulnerability and challenge of this process. More importantly, it allowed me to cultivate a compassionate attitude towards myself.

Picture the discomfort of being naked in public—whether at work, the gym, or in front of loved ones. It’s an embarrassing yet authentic experience. This journey of self-discovery revealed my true essence.

During this phase, I often found myself clinging to others’ beliefs rather than embracing my own. It was an essential time of clarity, allowing me to reassess my values through personal experiences. I chose to retain some beliefs while discarding those that no longer resonated with me.

By peeling away the unnecessary layers, I embraced the parts of myself that reflected my true identity. With a newfound understanding of my core beliefs, I felt prepared to reconstruct my internal pyramid, replacing weak and maladaptive beliefs with stronger, healthier ones.

This transformation significantly improved my stability, resilience, and overall quality of life. I now recognize that reshaping core beliefs is an ongoing journey, adapting as I encounter new experiences and challenges.

Keeping flexibility at the heart of my foundation offers hope, enabling me to navigate life with grace, much like leaves dancing in the wind.
