Transforming Beliefs to Shape My Future
Written on
Chapter 1: Early Life Challenges
Growing up, my family faced severe financial hardships. In fact, "poor" hardly captures our reality—it was a life devoid of basic necessities, such as electricity. This absence meant that we missed out on conveniences that many take for granted, like televisions and refrigerators. The lack of refrigeration severely limited our diet, forcing us to be resourceful.
During my high school years, I often studied by the dim light of an oil lamp, a constant reminder of our struggles. Like many young girls, I yearned for a doll. With Christmas approaching, my hopes would rise, only to be dashed time and again. Instead, my sisters and I crafted our own dolls from dried mango seeds, pretending they were the toys we so desperately wanted.
This experience cemented a belief within me: stop wishing for things you will never have. Some people have much, while others have little—that's just how life is. However, I learned to work hard, remain resilient, and make the best of what I had.
Section 1.1: The Power of Stories
As the middle child, I found solace in books and poetry, allowing me to escape the harsh realities surrounding me. My school’s storybooks captivated me, with two tales standing out:
- Androcles and the Lion: In this story, Androcles helps a lion in pain by removing a thorn from its paw. Later, when Androcles is punished and thrown into a lion's den, the same lion he helped shows him compassion, leading to both of their freedom.
- The Boy Who Held Back the Sea: This tale follows a young boy in the Netherlands who prevents his village from flooding by bravely blocking a leak in a dike all night.
From these stories, I learned the importance of kindness, sacrifice, and helping others, regardless of the risks involved.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Influence of Faith
In my teenage years, I joined a church community after my father's passing. It was a vibrant, charismatic environment that allowed me to grow. Two biblical passages particularly resonated with me:
- Matthew 19:23–24: Jesus teaches that it is difficult for the wealthy to enter heaven, likening it to a camel passing through the eye of a needle.
- Luke 16:19–31: This passage contrasts the fates of a rich man and a beggar named Lazarus, emphasizing the consequences of one's earthly life.
These teachings shaped my belief that the pursuit of wealth could lead to spiritual ruin, while being poor might be a path to divine connection.
Chapter 2: Transition to Adulthood
As I entered adulthood, these beliefs accompanied me. I prided myself on my kindness and integrity, always striving to uplift others. Yet, a deep-seated desire for financial stability influenced my choices.
As a single mother, I made the tough decision to accept a teaching position abroad to secure a better future for my son. Living as an immigrant was challenging, as I often felt out of place. However, my commitment to serving others turned me into a popular chemistry teacher, allowing me not just to survive, but to thrive in a foreign land.

Change was necessary for my financial beliefs. I clung to money with a desperation akin to a drowning person grasping for air. I became overly frugal, determined never to experience the poverty of my youth again.
Yet, I gradually realized that living in a mindset of scarcity was detrimental. I began to shift my perspective on money—not as something to hoard, but as a tool for good. The more I embraced this abundance mentality, the more financial opportunities came my way.

Section 2.1: Embracing New Possibilities
One memorable summer, my family gathered in Fort Lauderdale to celebrate the New Year. Upon arriving at a packed event, my son surprised me by confidently driving into a full parking garage—something I would have hesitated to do.
His attitude has always been one of determination. When he expressed a desire to run for school president, I tried to discourage him, citing the odds against him. Yet, he looked me in the eye and declared, "I'd rather lose than never try." His unwavering spirit won the day, and he ultimately became president.
My evolving belief: Life is more adaptable than I perceive. My mindset can either hinder or propel me, and I must be willing to explore the possibilities.
Section 2.2: Recognizing Self-Worth
Before the pandemic, my son invited me to Universal Studios in Orlando. I was thrilled, having long wished to take him there but never could afford it. He went above and beyond, booking the best hotel for our stay.
When I questioned his spending, he simply replied, "Mom, you are worth the best."
This moment shifted my belief: I am valuable and deserving of the things I desire. I no longer need to settle for less.
Conclusion: The Power of Belief
Ultimately, what we believe shapes our reality. The boy I raised to pursue his dreams has now become a young man who inspires me to do the same. He reminds me of my worth and encourages me to embrace my potential.
I am stepping boldly into the future, with the belief that the best is yet to come. A heartfelt thank you to Toni the Talker for the inspiration.
