The Pipe Nebula: A Stunning New Image from the Cosmic Companion

Chapter 1: The Pipe Nebula Unveiled

The Pipe Nebula, also known as B78, has recently been showcased in a vibrant new composite image created by The Cosmic Companion and Telescope Live.

A stunning color composite of the Pipe Nebula

Situated about 450 light years away from Earth, in the general direction of the Milky Way's center, lies a collection of dark clouds referred to as the Ophiuchus dark cloud complex. These clouds are the sites where gas and dust are collapsing, paving the way for the birth of new stars.

This nebula was first identified by astronomer E. E. Barnard in the early 1900s and is one of five dark nebulae cataloged by him in this area. The dark formation at the lower right, which resembles the numeral five, is called the Snake Nebula. Personally, I would have preferred to name it the #5 Nebula, but alas, that was not my decision!

These dark structures were observed shortly after Nicolaus Copernicus introduced his heliocentric model of the Solar System, and even before the advent of the telescope, credited to Hans Lipperhey from the Netherlands.

The composite image was crafted from eight individual photographs taken in red, green, blue, and monochrome channels on the night of July 29, utilizing the 10-cm AUS-2 Telescope based in Australia, made available through Telescope Live.
