Chapter 1: The Lesson from Regulus
In the annals of history, Marcus Atilius Regulus stands as a testament to honor and commitment. Captured by the Carthaginians, he spent five long years in captivity. Eventually, he was permitted to return to Rome to negotiate a peace treaty, under the strict condition that failure would result in his return to imprisonment. True to his word, he embarked on the journey back to Rome, ultimately persuading the Senate to reject the peace terms, despite knowing it would lead him back to captivity. He chose the tougher route, paying a significant personal cost, because he valued his promise.
Recently, I set a personal challenge for myself: to engage in a four-week writing commitment. My objective was to establish a consistent writing routine by posting daily from Monday to Friday. While this task seemed straightforward compared to Regulus's arduous journey, I found myself unable to see it through. I managed 12 posts before missing a day, which spiraled into missing another, leading to my eventual surrender of the challenge.
It’s tempting to rationalize my failure by pointing to competing priorities or unforeseen circumstances. I could dismiss it as inconsequential. However, the truth is that breaking this commitment carries consequences that weigh heavier than I want to admit. I let down a promise I made to myself, reinforcing a troubling inner dialogue.
This narrative tells me I often start projects but fail to finish them. It suggests I am unreliable, unworthy, and incapable of achieving my dreams. If I aspire to rise above my current situation, to embrace my identity as a writer and creator, I must devise a realistic plan, commit to it, and persist, regardless of obstacles. This is the only way to rewrite my story, to cultivate the trust in myself that I see in figures like Marcus Atilius Regulus.
