Navigating Change: Embracing New Opportunities in Business

Chapter 1: The Shift We Need
During a recent free introductory call, Sarah, a media professional, expressed her frustration and fatigue regarding her struggling business. Despite her relentless efforts, including countless emails to secure new projects, her revenue remained stagnant. With tears in her eyes, she confessed a longing to return to full-time employment.
Sarah (a pseudonym) is a seasoned expert in media, particularly as an exceptional editor with extensive experience in editorial management. When it comes to revamping editorial systems, she is unparalleled. Unfortunately, her client pipeline had all but vanished.
This sentiment resonates with many of my clients throughout 2023, especially as the year winds down. Our conversation took place just before the holidays, amplifying the sense of silence in the industry. The combination of this seasonal lull, a challenging economy, and budget cuts from businesses led to what felt like a dire situation.
“Can you assist me?” Sarah asked softly.
I responded with a crucial insight:
You can't continue with your previous strategies and expect different results. I wish it were that simple, but times have changed. You have evolved, your clients have evolved, and their requirements have transformed. The landscape of 2024 will be different, and none of this is a reflection of your capabilities; it's merely how things progress, especially in a strained economy.
In essence: If you want your business to generate income, you need to adjust your approach and how you present yourself.
She paused, the sound of her pen clicking filled the silence as she contemplated my words.
“I can guide you on what needs to change,” I offered, “but only if you're ready for it. Only if you truly want it.”
“Okay,” she finally replied. “I’m ready.”
Sarah and I are currently in a transformative phase, dedicating three months to reconstructing her business framework for long-term success. She is uncovering her desires, understanding her true self, and learning how to implement these shifts moving forward. She’s beginning to think like an entrepreneur, viewing obstacles as chances to pivot. Additionally, she is developing resilience, asking questions, and staying curious about challenges without taking them to heart. Most importantly, she is learning to trust her instincts.
I've been reflecting on a phrase from Suzy Holman's podcast, "Your Business Will Heal You," as I work with Sarah and others in similar situations. The year 2024 beckons us to elevate our game and rethink our strategies. This journey can be daunting; it requires immense courage and a willingness to confront our ingrained beliefs and habits. However, redefining our business can also serve as a healing process. By inquiring, shifting judgment to curiosity, learning to recover from setbacks, and building our self-confidence, we address some of our deepest wounds.
Sarah is in the process of launching a new service line aimed at a different demographic. She is diligently reconnecting with former clients while also seeking new opportunities. By asking her clients what they truly need, she aims to create solutions at accessible price points that meet their demands and align with her capabilities. She is establishing new boundaries, asserting control over her work rather than conforming to others' expectations, and realizing the true value of her expertise.
While her journey has included moments of profound sorrow, such as clients retracting offers due to budget constraints, it has also prompted her to confront her self-doubt and recognize that she often holds herself accountable for factors beyond her control. She is working through past traumas from previous media roles that linger in her daily life, perpetually anticipating setbacks.
The positive aspects of this journey come hand-in-hand with challenges. Embracing the full spectrum of experience is essential for building a sustainable business and fostering personal growth. The success of our business is a direct reflection of our internal development, always.
As we approach 2024, we must brace ourselves for more challenges. The economic landscape is shifting, industries are contracting, and we must cultivate creativity. We will need to embrace curiosity and strengthen our relationships. Listening attentively, experimenting, and remaining adaptable are crucial.
I believe you have the capacity to navigate this change. If you’re willing to embrace these challenges, you will find the strength to make it work.
Now is the ideal moment to start reflecting on some pivotal questions:
- How is this year encouraging you to evolve?
- What practices are no longer serving you, and can you release them?
- What barriers are preventing you from letting go of ineffective strategies?
- What trends have you observed that you might explore further?
- What do your clients need from you? (Have you inquired?)
- How can you creatively meet those needs?
We can achieve this together. WE can do this.
