# Lessons Learned from My Boss: Insights on Leadership

Understanding Leadership Through Experience
A year ago, I penned an article reflecting on the insights gained from my boss. It was evident that an update was inevitable. Spending considerable time with someone often reveals their strengths and weaknesses, allowing for a realistic perspective. Through this experience, I've pinpointed a few admirable qualities worth emulating.
Having collaborated with him for nearly two years, one key takeaway is the necessity for alignment between your personal style and that of your employer, whether in a small startup or a large corporation.
Some individuals remain at their jobs for hefty salaries, others cherish their work environment, and a select few enjoy a balance of both. For me, my workplace atmosphere has been the primary reason for my two-year tenure here. I appreciate the autonomy I have in managing the clinic, from overseeing personnel to handling schedules, vendors, and inventory. My boss focuses primarily on patient care and revenue growth, areas where he excels.
Our working relationship is pragmatic; we share a mutual understanding on clinical decisions and overall management of patients and staff.
He has a profound belief in the value of multiple income streams, almost as if it’s part of his identity. While I admire the concept, I doubt I would implement it to the same extent. My inclinations lean more towards altruism and prioritizing people's well-being.
Recently, the highlight of my job has been the tutoring sessions he conducts. When an intriguing clinical case arises, he initiates a detailed discussion, posing questions about symptoms, signs, and management strategies.
With over 50 years of experience in medicine and having graduated at the top of his class, these sessions are invaluable. They complement the hours I spend studying for board exams by making complex concepts more tangible. I can't quantify the worth of this mentorship.
In general, being an effective boss involves hiring skilled individuals and then allowing them the freedom to excel—an idea echoed by Tina Fey.
