# The Importance of Embracing Jargon in Communication

Chapter 1: The Intricacies of Jargon

Whenever I embark on a new interest, I am often inundated with unfamiliar terminology and concepts. For instance, while exploring cinematography for my YouTube projects, I stumbled upon the phrase ‘short-sided compositions.’ This term refers to when a subject looks out of the frame rather than inward.

Why not just say that directly?

This complexity frustrated me; I felt it would have been simpler to use plain language. Yet, I found myself sifting through countless other technical terms to grasp the meaning. Recently, however, I’ve begun to appreciate the concept of ‘jargon’ from a fresh perspective. Jargon is defined as “special words or phrases used within a particular profession or group that may be difficult for outsiders to understand.”

Section 1.1: The Role of Jargon in Communication

Why do we develop specialized language that only a select few comprehend? Is it to exclude those outside the circle? To create an unwelcoming atmosphere? Or is it a cultural tendency to complicate language to convey a sense of ‘insider knowledge’?

It took time for me to understand the broader implications of this. As a medical professional, I have been instructed to minimize jargon when interacting with patients. Yet, I had not considered the advantages of employing jargon among my colleagues.

For instance, using the term ‘tuberculosis’ rather than simply saying ‘infection’ provides more precise meaning, clarity, and context. This single term allows my peers and me to instantly grasp the nature of the infection, recognize the symptoms involved, and determine effective management strategies.

Section 1.2: The Benefits of Jargon

Jargon serves an essential purpose when it comes to conveying complex ideas and concepts succinctly. It enables groups, communities, and professions to encapsulate these intricate ideas into manageable, conversational snippets of understanding.

For those who frequently revisit similar topics in discussions, jargon alleviates the need to constantly rephrase their thoughts. When a community establishes a systematic collection of terms, it spares every subsequent member from the pitfalls of miscommunication and misunderstanding.

Jargon does not hinder outsiders; instead, it empowers insiders to flourish.

Chapter 2: Expanding the Understanding of Language

In the video "Why YOU Should Learn a Language, Explained in 4 Minutes," the importance of language acquisition is highlighted, showcasing how learning new languages can enhance communication and cultural understanding.

The second video, "4 reasons to learn a new language | John McWhorter," emphasizes the cognitive and social benefits of expanding one's linguistic repertoire, advocating for the significance of embracing new languages.
