The Heavy Burden of the 16-Inch MacBook Pro: A Traveler's Dilemma
Written on
Chapter 1: The Struggles of Travel
Let me be honest with you. As I sit in a café in London working on my review of the Google Pixel 7, I find myself wishing I could toss my 16-inch MacBook Pro into the River Thames. This laptop isn't the only thing weighing down my backpack, though. Alongside it, I’m also carrying a Sony FX3 camera, a mini tripod, an iPad Air with a Magic Keyboard, a change of clothes, and a tangle of charging cables.

Section 1.1: The Weight of Technology
Despite my gear not being particularly heavy on its own, when combined, it creates a considerable burden. The FX3 is one of the lightest full-frame cinema cameras available, the mini tripod is hardly noticeable, and the iPad Air is lightweight. However, adding the 16-inch MacBook Pro transforms my backpack into a cumbersome load. So hefty, in fact, that I'm starting to rethink my laptop choices.
Subsection 1.1.1: Embracing Travel
My recent travels have increased as I pursue content for the Mark Ellis Reviews channel. Whether I’m in London focusing on a smartphone review or flying to Amsterdam next week for an event with JBL, I’m finally stepping outside the confines of my studio. Traveling is a privilege I cherish, but it often feels like I bring too much tech along for the ride.
Section 1.2: The Challenge of Filming
I tend to film myself during my travels, and my preference for high-quality equipment leads me to carry the FX3 instead of relying on my smartphone. I also write on the go (like I am now in a bustling coffee shop in London’s financial district), so I need a practical writing tool. With multiple videos in progress at any given time, I require the editing capabilities of the 16-inch MacBook Pro, which unfortunately introduces some challenges.
Chapter 2: The Portability Trade-Off

The decision to opt for the larger MacBook stemmed primarily from its stunning display, which is perfect for editing while on the move. However, the trade-off in terms of portability is significant.
I’ve received comments from some viewers suggesting I should "hit the gym" if I find the laptop heavy. But trust me, after a full day of carrying this device around, it feels anything but light—regardless of fitness levels. Its size can be quite limiting when trying to edit in cramped spaces like small tables or standard train carriages. In short, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is a giant machine.

The issue of portability leads me to consider alternatives. While I believe the 16-inch MacBook Pro is a fantastic machine, mine is more powerful than necessary, giving me confidence in its long-term value.
Chapter 3: Considering Alternatives
Having spent time with the 14-inch model last year, I often think about its convenience—it’s much easier to carry under my arm. While it lacks the expansive display of the 16-inch version, it's compact enough to be used almost anywhere, allowing me to write wherever I find myself.
With new Mac releases on the horizon, including a potential M2-powered MacBook Pro, I plan to review these options. However, lugging around the hefty 16-inch model today has me contemplating whether it’s time to make a change.
Chapter 4: The Quest for Final Cut Pro on iPad
A long-standing desire of mine has been to see Final Cut Pro available on the iPad Pro. This would resolve many of my dilemmas. If I could edit on my iPad Pro, I could have traveled lighter this week and avoided the back strain that comes with my heavy laptop.
For Apple to make this a reality, the iPad version of Final Cut Pro must be complete, with no compromises on features. Seamless switching between devices is essential, and managing large library files effectively is a challenge that needs addressing.
Final Thoughts
If you own a 16-inch MacBook Pro, do you ever regret your choice? Have you experienced similar burdens during your travels? Are you considering the 14-inch version for your next upgrade? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
