Chapter 1: Introduction to This Week's Selections
When I embarked on my writing journey on Medium back in January 2022, I never anticipated that I would become an editor for The Narrative Arc two years later. I vividly recall the moment I received an email from Debra Harman inviting me to join her esteemed team. My reaction was one of disbelief—me, an editor?
The honor I felt was immense. Having read numerous memoirs and personal essays featured in The Narrative Arc, I quickly understood their exceptional quality. The driving force behind this excellence is Debra G. Harman, MEd., the editor-in-chief, who dedicates herself to nurturing writers who have honed their craft through hard work. Each editor on the team meticulously reviews every submission, collaborating with writers to elevate their pieces to the highest standards—this includes everything from formatting to selecting captivating images. Indeed, we are committed to enhancing the quality of our selections.
Choosing just six stories from the high caliber of work submitted each week proved to be a daunting task. Every piece I encountered presented a distinctive perspective, whether it was evoking deep emotions, providing comic relief, or offering experiences that expanded my understanding of the world.
So, brew a cup of tea, get cozy in your favorite chair, and let’s dive into the themes of trees, tornadoes, opera, love, and babysitters featured in my five Editor's Picks.
Section 1.1: Linda Caroll
Even if poetry isn't typically your thing, I believe that after exploring Linda's essay, you'll be inspired to seek out more of Mary Oliver's works alongside Linda's own eloquent writing. She masterfully intertwines lines from Oliver's renowned poem, "Wild Geese," with her personal life experiences, reminding us that regardless of what we endure from others or life itself, there are always those fleeting moments where our hearts connect.
Section 1.2: Nadine Bjursten
What could a beech forest, teenage twins, a fractured ankle, and a mother’s love possibly have in common? Nadine leads us through a spring hike, delicately contrasting the existence of trees with her family’s lives. This essay ignited my curiosity about the aspects of nature I have yet to discover and how, in various ways, we are all intertwined with it.
Subsection 1.2.1: James Porter
To truly understand love, one must first experience heartbreak. Through simple yet heartfelt prose, James guides readers through his journey of longing for a love he hoped would last forever, only to realize that he needed more to find true happiness. Prepare yourself with tissues—this one may bring tears.
Section 1.3: Melissa Gray
Tornadoes are daunting, even for the most fearless among us. However, when seen through the eyes of an eight-year-old girl who fears for her mother's safety and must rely on her father's strength, the tension escalates significantly. Melissa's memoir kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. There were definitely tears involved.
Chapter 2: M.J. Flood's Journey
By his own admission, M.J. was quite the stereotypical "man's man" during his courtship of his future wife. He believed all she desired was Sunday Night Football, a couple of beers, and time spent with him and his friends. So when she expressed a longing for more, his instinctive response was, "Okay, so what? You want to go to the opera?"
M.J. recounts his experience at the opera with heartwarming humor. Discover what unfolds when a tough man's heart is touched by a poignant aria—I'm confident you'll be as moved as I was.
Section 2.1: Chevie Hanssler's Reflections
Chevie's upbringing was far from easy, as she was raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly and was reluctant to burden family members with childcare duties. The answer? A series of babysitters—some decent, some quite unpleasant. Nevertheless, Chevie made the most of her situation, finding solace in music on the radio that helped her feel connected to her mother, even in her absence.
