A Heartfelt Journey: From Theft to Gratitude

Written on

Chapter 1: A Journey Begins

When you write, let your heart guide your pen. In September 2020, I found myself reflecting on my past when I decided to collect my original journals, which I had taken from Eason's in O’Connell, Ireland, along with a few pens. Since then, I’ve revisited the store to apologize for my actions during a time when I was homeless and desperate for a way to express myself.

On the day I chose to make amends, I brought my first completed journal with me. I approached a member of the Security team and requested a brief conversation with the Manager. After explaining it was a personal matter, I was soon greeted by a woman who inquired how she could assist me. I shared my story of homelessness in September 2020, detailing how I had taken two Pukka Pads and pens from the store due to financial struggles. I expressed my sincere regret and offered to show her the completed journal to demonstrate how those pads had helped me.

The journal contained both gratitude lists and reflections, marking my initial foray into expressing appreciation through writing. She was interested and looked through it. Before opening the pad, the Manager remarked that I was a bit eccentric for returning to apologize for my theft.

I vividly recall the moment when the Manager, after reviewing my journal, told me to wait while she stepped away. I half-expected the police to arrive, but instead, she returned with a heavy Eason's shopping bag. I was puzzled and asked what it contained. She replied, “People need to see and hear your words, so here are six more pads, a bunch of pens, and a €50 voucher for your honesty. When your book is finished, we’d love for you to hold your first signing here.” Words cannot describe how astonished I felt that day.

While working on my manuscript in Microsoft Word, I stumbled upon two pages from my journal dated October 31, 2020. At that time, I was supported by the Dublin Simon Community, which had rescued me from the streets just three weeks earlier. For anyone interested in gratitude, appreciation, and the positive aspects of life, I invite you to reflect on these thoughts.
