Exploring the Balance Between Want and Need in Life

Chapter 1: Understanding Wants and Needs
A few years back, during a discussion, someone remarked that life is more about needs than wants. They claimed that focusing solely on needs would ensure a stable existence, while pursuing wants could lead to dissatisfaction. They suggested that needs are essential for survival, whereas wants are mere luxuries.
This perspective resonated with me at the time. I began to internalize the idea that desires equated to greed, while necessities were inherently positive. Thus, I decided to prioritize my needs over my wants, aiming to keep my wants to a bare minimum.
As a result, I thrived. I categorized everything in my life under needs and eliminated any mention of wants.
However, what followed was unexpected: my aspirations began to fade away. The things that once inspired me no longer made it onto my needs list, and I found myself living a hollow existence.
I had overlooked an important detail—the individual who shared their views on wants and needs was navigating their own challenges, and their perspective was shaped by those circumstances, not mine.
This morning, I decided to draft a list of my own wants and needs. Surprisingly, the same items appeared in both categories:
- I need to be a writer.
- I want to be a writer.
The second statement filled me with excitement, igniting a wave of energy that urged me to open my laptop and start writing. Conversely, the first line felt like an obligation on my to-do list.
This realization hit me hard: I need to embrace my wants. I want to write poetry, create art, and acquire new skills that invigorate my mind. I want to chase my dreams and uncover what they truly are.
It became clear that approaching life solely through the lens of need isn't always beneficial. Wanting can be equally valuable.
I felt compelled to share this insight. It stemmed from a seemingly trivial conversation that ultimately sparked significant change within me.
Another important lesson emerged during this reflection: I don't have to adhere to someone else's beliefs.
