Chapter 1: The Stereotype of Technology and Age

There's a common stereotype that suggests individuals over fifty struggle with modern technology. As someone who has crossed that threshold, I reject being labeled as a tech novice. This classification was never requested, and I take issue with it.

I was the one who tackled the challenge of setting up my VCR back in the '90s. Rather than wading through the user manual, I opted to decipher it through the accompanying images. Every child knows that following visual instructions is the most effective way to navigate complex setups involving wires and various buttons. I was like a middle-aged kid, and it worked well for me.

As a woman of advanced age, I took pride in this mechanical achievement. Many of my peers would have relied on their eight-year-old nephew or their husbands for help. Convincing a husband to handle tech tasks, especially when he knows no more than you do, is a classic trick. While often futile, outsourcing these tasks to others can feel easier and more enjoyable.

Now, here I am in my seventies, equipped with a new laptop running the latest Windows operating system. In a moment of affection and whimsy, I named my laptop Rambo. Adapting to laptops is unfamiliar territory for me, and Windows 11 feels like an entirely different world with its own set of odd customs and rules.

Chapter 2: The Battle with Rambo

So, should I toss Rambo out the window or drop him on the floor and stomp? Absolutely not! I've invested in this device, and it’s against the rules to destroy something that costs money.

Do I give in to frustration, scream, and pull my hair out? Yes, indeed!

After a long session of struggling with Rambo, my head aches, my throat is sore, and my hair is a total mess. I decide to set Rambo on a high shelf, away from my immediate reach, for the time being.

I allow Rambo to relax for the evening. Tomorrow is a new day, brimming with the potential for me to conquer this mechanical adversary.

I’m a determined contender, but Rambo is equally relentless. Just as I begin to grasp one feature, another hurdle appears. I sometimes think my laptop is possessed by a mischievous spirit intent on testing my patience. My only solace is knowing that eventually, he will exhaust his supply of frustrating challenges, and I will emerge victorious.

Dressed in my metaphorical superhero suit, I transform into Cyber Granny, the unstoppable older lady ready for battle. No one can defeat Cyber Granny! I possess abilities that surpass those of ordinary older women. I’m figuring out how to navigate the latest version of Word as we speak!

The struggle continues. Next on my agenda is installing Grammarly for Microsoft Word on Rambo. I will succeed, and victory will be mine. Justice, truth, and a fair approach will prevail!
