Embracing Kindness: The Importance of Understanding Pain
Written on
Chapter 1: A Moment of Discovery
Not long ago, while wandering through my local Costco on a pleasant Friday, I stumbled upon a chair that took me back to my youth. It reminded me of the luxurious seating that used to be showcased at The Sharper Image and Brookstone, known for their high-end products.
This chair was incredibly inviting, complete with plush supports for my calves, a footrest, and shiatsu massage features for my neck and shoulders.
"Would you care to try it out?" asked the salesman, his tone almost too smooth.
I was quick to kick off my shoes, and he promised a full-body experience with a remote control. For six minutes, I felt utterly transformed, producing sounds that no adult should emit in a store.
“It’s amazing, isn’t it? Just think how much more you could do at home when you feel this good…”
Chapter 2: The Cost of Comfort
As I pondered the $6,000 price tag, I realized this chair was out of my reach, yet the bliss I experienced made me wonder about the investment. Despite living in a cramped apartment with two others, I found myself calculating payment plans, all while surrounded by bulk bags of dog food.
Admittedly, I left Costco feeling revitalized and accomplished that day.
Section 2.1: A Call to Awareness
Regardless of where you're reading this, I hope you can focus without interruptions and engage in all your desired activities free from discomfort.
This is a call to recognize that everyone you encounter—friends, family, or service workers—might be battling their own pain. Earlier this year, I committed to maintaining my physical health and began exercising regularly.
Despite my back issues and visits to a chiropractor, I persisted. To alleviate the pain, I often heated a bean bag for comfort, using it before bed, during naps, and even while watching television.
After a trip to California, where I hiked extensively, I returned home without the need for that bean bag. I continued my push-up routine, but soon experienced shoulder pain, leading my chiropractor to suspect a nerve impingement.

Section 2.2: Understanding Our Limits
The physical therapist pointed out that while I had strengthened the front of my body, I neglected the back. As a result, I began a series of corrective exercises.
On August 17, the pain in my arm became too severe for push-ups, but I noticed real improvements from physical therapy. With each session, I regained mobility and experienced less discomfort.
Just a few days ago, I was able to complete five push-ups to start my day!
Chapter 3: Recognizing Our Bodies
Wouldn’t it be convenient if we had a way to gauge our physical readiness, like a power meter? During a recent trip to the coast with my wife, I felt energetic and attempted a handstand.
The first attempt was shaky, but the second one succeeded—until I hesitated, pulling a hamstring in the process.
By the time we returned home, my arm was throbbing. The next morning, I struggled to find a comfortable position to sleep, but duty called, and I had work to do.
Section 3.1: The Daily Grind
That day, I transported 16 passengers over 275 miles, greeting each with a smile, despite the discomfort. I resisted the urge to grunt as I lifted luggage, aware of the typical responses from men over 45.
Though someone may have asked how I was feeling, I’ve learned to interpret polite inquiries as mere formalities after completing over 22,000 rides.
Chapter 4: The Unseen Struggles
Many people struggle silently with chronic pain—over 50 million in the U.S. alone. That’s roughly 1 in 6 individuals. Some may appear fine on the outside, while others are housebound due to their discomfort.
While some individuals have the courage to speak openly about their challenges, many do not. It's crucial to approach everyone with empathy, remembering that you never truly know the battles they face daily.
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”
In truth,
