Seniors, particularly those in their eighties and nineties, possess a treasure trove of historical knowledge, having witnessed pivotal moments throughout their lives. Their firsthand accounts of significant events provide insights that are invaluable to younger generations.

It's remarkable to reflect on what these individuals grew up without—major appliances, personal cars, computers, televisions, and even private telephones. They have lived through an era marked by rapid industrialization and modernization, experiencing firsthand the transformations that younger individuals now take for granted.

Many seniors played pivotal roles in fields that have undergone significant advancements, such as medicine and technology. After all, this generation was instrumental in achieving milestones like putting a man on the moon!

Despite their impressive backgrounds, it is perplexing to see a reluctance among many seniors (specifically those aged 80 and above) to stay current with today’s technology. For instance, a 92-year-old man who learned to read and subsequently published books, or a 90-year-old woman in Kenya who attends school alongside her great-great-grandchildren. These remarkable individuals remind us that education knows no age limits.

With age, physical abilities often decline—vision dims, hearing fades, and daily tasks become more challenging. This loss of independence can lead to feelings of depression, especially when seniors can no longer drive, a hallmark of their autonomy.

Those nonagenarians who embrace new skills are not unlike their peers who may choose to remain isolated. The distinction lies in their willingness to step outside their comfort zones and seek new experiences. It’s reminiscent of the saying, “When God closes a door, He opens a window.”

Seniors who prioritize their independence often find innovative ways to adapt despite physical limitations. At present, my goal is to practice patience and kindness as I navigate life’s changes with those around me, regardless of their age. Can I help others see technology as a positive force that can enhance their lives and sense of purpose? For me, I am open to embracing changes that simplify daily living, such as attending a virtual doctor’s appointment while on vacation.

I will adapt to some changes while resisting others—after all, I draw the line at starting a gas grill with just propane and a match!
