Embrace Gratitude: Engaging Your Senses for a Deeper Connection

Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey Beyond Words

For about a year, I collected micro-expressions of gratitude on slips of paper, placing them into an old fishbowl, hoping to elevate my vibrations. I noted down affirmations to enhance my self-esteem, self-worth, and self-love. While these methods yielded some positive outcomes, it wasn't until I incorporated my senses that I truly began to experience an amplified sense of gratitude.

If what we concentrate on expands, shouldn't we aim our focus towards sensations that bring joy, instead of fueling negative feelings such as sadness, anger, or despair through self-blame or criticism? This harmful cycle can continue endlessly.

In writing, we are taught to demonstrate rather than declare; to incorporate vivid details that evoke emotions in the reader. I discovered a similar principle applies to gratitude. When I merely state, "I appreciate my LAMY pen," it feels hollow. However, when I channel my energy into the sensations of the pen resting in my fingers, the weight of the purple ink against the white page, and the soft scratching as words take shape, it creates a profound feeling within me. When I pause to inhale the yellow hue of my pen, a wave of joy emerges from within.

Engaging the Senses

  1. Sight

Rather than just saying, "I’m thankful for the sun," I observe my cat lounging in a sunbeam. I picture the warmth he’s soaking up. Even better, I find a sunny spot to recline in, allowing the rays to envelop me. This sensory journey ignites a deep-rooted sense of gratitude.

  2. Hearing

Each morning, I silently acknowledge the three spruce trees I’ve named "The Sisters." I envision them meditating, their roots firmly anchored in the soil of my front yard. I connect with their stillness and then hear my cat chirping at my feet, his way of requesting breakfast. The furnace hums warm air through the ducts, and the coffee grows bitter in the carafe with every tick of the clock. My breath flows rhythmically, and I feel grateful for the joy that my hearing provides.

  3. Taste

Coffee is something I could dedicate entire sonatas to, if I were musically inclined. Yet, how often do I gulp it down, impatiently waiting for my mind to awaken, without truly savoring its essence? Just this morning, I realized how much I cherish the ritual of crafting the perfect cup. The grinding of beans — the sound, the aroma, and the texture — the precise measuring, and the magical process of watching it drip into the freshly cleaned carafe. I take the first sip, appreciating the journey of coffee from its blossom to my cup.

  4. Smell

Can I capture the essence of winter? It’s crisp and translucent, with its aroma trapped within each snowflake. What about the scent of the peeled orange resting on my writing table, left by my beloved? It exudes positivity, vibrant and alive. As I split it open, inhaling deeply, my mind pauses to absorb what’s about to come. I can feel a surge of gratitude from within.

  5. Touch

The tactile sensation of my keyboard’s keys, the weight of my cat curled up on my lap, the sting of sleet on my face, and the warmth of a steaming bath enveloping me as I lower myself in. The gentle brush of my lover’s lips on my temple and the cozy flannel sheets against my skin all connect me to my humanity.

Sensory Exploration

Focusing on pleasurable sensations through our senses can directly foster a feeling of gratitude. It’s about taking a moment to slow down and notice the small details that fill our days. This practice grounds us in the present, the space where gratitude flourishes.

Take a moment. Close your eyes. Feel your feet connect with the floor, envision roots extending into the earth. Inhale deeply. Place your palm against your chest. What sounds do you hear? Open your eyes. What sights greet you? Become a beacon for positivity. Live intentionally, savoring each moment from within.
