Chapter 1: The Impact of Going First
“Transforming your perspective can reshape your reality.”
- Satya Nadella
Currently, I’m delving into “Tools of Titans” by Tim Ferriss, the brilliant mind behind “The 4-Hour Workweek,” which remains one of my all-time favorites (if you haven’t checked it out, now’s the time!). In his latest book, Ferriss has gathered invaluable strategies, routines, and habits from extraordinary individuals he has interviewed on his podcast. It’s an extensive read, but I’m gradually making my way through it.
Last Saturday, while sipping way too much coffee at a local café, enjoying some rap tunes, and engrossed in my reading (highlighter in hand, of course), I stumbled upon a powerful idea that I felt compelled to share. I don’t recall the name of the speaker, but I think he was a surfer who also dabbles in business. Regardless, he discussed a personal rule he adopted years ago, which radically transformed his life.
He committed to being the first to engage in every situation—whether it’s offering a greeting, initiating a handshake, smiling at a passerby, or even taking the plunge into chilly waters. The concept is simple yet profound.
Consider how often we walk by someone without exchanging a word or even making eye contact. We’re all guilty of it, myself included. Life keeps us occupied, and we often have a lot on our minds. But really, how much effort does it take to share a smile?
Since I’ve embraced this “go-first principle” this past week, the results have been astounding! I never anticipated that such a minor change could yield such significant impacts on my daily interactions. Smiling at everyone not only lifts my spirits but often prompts them to smile back, which is quite remarkable.
People are frequently waiting for someone else to take that first step. This week has taught me that it genuinely takes bravery to be the one who “goes first.” It involves risks; not everyone will reciprocate your smile or greeting, and some may even respond negatively. However, that says more about them than it does about you.
By initiating conversations, offering genuine greetings, and being the courageous individual who "goes first," you can bring joy to yourself and many others. It echoes the sentiment I’ve long held in my vision statement:
You attract what you emit into the universe—the positive and the negative. While this principle can lead to struggles, it can also manifest the life you desire. It all begins with a simple smile towards the world. Display your joy, confidence, and self-worth, and you will be continually rewarded.
Each week, I strive to challenge both my thinking and yours. This week, I encourage you to be the person who confidently “goes first.” Be the individual who becomes a cherished memory for someone else. Be the source of infectious energy that others are eager to engage with. I assure you, this small shift will benefit you as it has benefited me.
Keep in mind that the mindset you carry each day shapes your reality. By choosing to be cheerful, approachable, and proactive, you will reap the rewards.
Until next time, friends,
Matt
