Harnessing Daily Spirituality for Personal Growth and Healing

Chapter 1: Understanding Spirituality
What leads me to believe that dedicating just an hour each week to positive thoughts and good deeds will sustain me throughout the days ahead? In my earlier days, I envisioned God as a distant figure, seated on a magnificent throne, making decisions about my eternal fate. Yet, spirituality reveals that our true Higher Power resides within us, not in some far-off realm. This understanding allows us the freedom to define our Higher Power in any way that resonates with us personally.
Many newcomers to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) see their group as a manifestation of their Higher Power. And indeed, it serves this purpose well. Typically, when we exit an AA meeting, we feel uplifted, thanks to the shared words and actions within that space.
Chapter 2: Sustaining Positive Spirituality
The next challenge is maintaining these uplifting feelings about ourselves and others beyond the confines of church or AA gatherings. Spirituality encourages us to revisit the 3rd Step whenever we encounter emotional highs or lows—or even when we’re unsure how we feel. A simple invocation of “God, help me” can work wonders. Then, we must step back and allow Him to take the reins.
Each morning, as we prepare to tackle the day ahead, we should invoke the 11th Step. We ask for insight into His will for us and the strength to act upon it. His intention for me is to experience happiness, joy, and freedom, rather than being burdened by troubles. I achieve this state of being by seeking help regularly throughout the day—not just on Sunday mornings or during AA meetings. When faced with challenges, I turn to the concise version of the 3rd Step: “God Help Me!” and trust in His support. May peace accompany you on this journey!
