Introduction to NewsBreak Writing
The landscape of journalism is changing, with many traditional newspapers struggling to survive. Readers increasingly turn to online platforms for the latest updates. NewsBreak, which has been operational for nearly two decades, strives to become the leading source for news on the internet. With over 40 million users, it stands as the top downloaded news application on both Google Play and the Apple Store.
According to NewsBreak's LinkedIn profile, their mission is clear:
"We invite talented individuals to join our team to fulfill our objective: Connect readers with valuable local content; link content creators and publishers with their audiences; and empower communities through journalism."
Having been a contributor since November 2020, I have witnessed both the progress and hurdles associated with the platform. Writing for NewsBreak is not without its challenges; adaptability is crucial as policies evolve.
Getting Started as a Writer
To begin your journey as a writer on NewsBreak, you'll need to either apply directly on their website or through a referral link. Before receiving payment, it's essential to gather at least 100 registered followers on the platform. The application process for becoming a paid writer may have changed since my start, so it's advisable to verify the latest requirements.
Next, you should aim to publish a minimum of 10 articles focusing on local news relevant to your community. Topics can span various areas, including:
- Restaurants
- Business
- Employment
- Politics
- Lifestyle
- Weather
- Traffic
These suggestions are just a starting point, and it may take up to a month for your writing to be approved on NewsBreak. It's important to note that the platform primarily caters to U.S. residents, with most contributors hailing from within the country. Few international writers have been accepted, so be aware of this when applying.
My Journey to 198 Million Views
When I joined NewsBreak in late 2020, I hesitated to start writing until December. Initially, I struggled to grasp the platform's expectations. Like many new writers, I experimented with various topics until I found my niche. Once I identified what I was passionate about, I ramped up my writing, sometimes producing three articles daily. However, after an algorithm change, I adjusted my output to one article per day.
Currently, I have amassed 67,000 followers, published 1,691 articles, and achieved over 17 million views on the NewsBreak app, totaling more than 198 million views across the platform. Residing in Texas, the majority of my articles center on local issues. Notably, one of my pieces was even retweeted by Governor Greg Abbott, highlighting Hispanic support for the Republican party during his re-election campaign.
